His guitar and razor-sharp wit turned discomfort into song — a singular voice of Dutch cabaret, still echoing.

Jeroen van Merwijk (1955–2021) was a Dutch cabaret performer, singer-songwriter, and painter, widely regarded as one of the most singular voices in Dutch kleinkunst. Accompanying himself on guitar, he built a repertoire of sharp, absurdist and often confronting songs and monologues that paired dark humour with disarming tenderness. Born in Amsterdam, he emerged in the 1980s and toured the Netherlands and Belgium for decades with theatre programmes praised for their fearless wordplay and uncompromising point of view. In 2011 he won the Annie M.G. Schmidt Prize for the best Dutch-language theatre song of the year, and his work earned him a devoted cult following among fellow performers and audiences alike. Beyond the stage, Van Merwijk was an accomplished painter. He died in 2021 at the age of 66, leaving behind a body of songs that remain touchstones of Dutch cabaret.
