Sam Cooke was an influential American singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur whose silky voice and undeniable charisma defined an era. Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1931 and raised in Chicago, he first rose to prominence in the mid-1950s as the lead singer of the gospel group the Soul Stirrers, where his innovative vocal style revolutionized sacred music. Transitioning to secular music, Cooke quickly became a pioneer of soul, blending elements of gospel, R&B, and pop to create a distinctive, sophisticated sound. His solo career, launched in 1957, yielded a string of enduring hits including "You Send Me," "Chain Gang," "Cupid," and the posthumously released civil rights anthem "A Change Is Gonna Come." Cooke was also a shrewd businessman, establishing his own record label, SAR Records, and publishing company, which granted him unprecedented creative and financial control. His smooth, effortless vocal delivery, often accompanied by his own acoustic guitar, became his signature, infusing his pop arrangements with soulful authenticity. Sam Cooke's trailblazing career was tragically cut short when he died in 1964 at the age of 33, leaving behind a profound musical legacy.
