The Sonor Orff Primary Deep Bass Diatonic Xylophone is a professional-grade educational instrument specifically engineered for the 'Orff Schulwerk' approach to music pedagogy. It provides a foundational bass voice for classroom ensembles, allowing students to explore rhythm and melody through physical interaction.

A key design feature is the inclusion of 16 sound bars that comprise a standard C-major scale. To increase versatility, Sonor includes additional F-sharp and B-flat bars, enabling the performance of pieces in the keys of G-major and F-major. The sound bars are printed with note lines, assisting beginners in correlating the physical instrument with musical notation.

Materials and Sustainability

Sustainability is a core component of the Primary series construction. The sound bars are crafted from Pao Rosa wood, sourced from FSC-certified forests to ensure ethical wood procurement. Similarly, the resonator box—the hollow body that amplifies the sound—is built from FSC-certified birch plywood.

To ensure safety for all age groups, the instrument is finished with Proterra, an ecological lacquer. This non-toxic finish provides a protective layer that withstands repeated classroom use while maintaining environmental standards.

Acoustic Characteristics

The instrument is tuned to provide a balance between deep bass resonance and melodic clarity. It employs overtone tuning up to the note A, which helps eliminate dissonant frequencies and ensures a pure pitch. From the note Bb upward, fundamental tuning is used to reinforce the depth and presence of the bass register. This dual-tuning approach ensures that the xylophone maintains a consistent timbre across its entire range, making it suitable for both solo play and ensemble support.

This xylophone is primarily intended for hands-on learning environments. Its deep bass register makes it ideal for providing the rhythmic and harmonic 'anchor' in a student percussion group. Because the bars are removable, educators can simplify the instrument for younger children by removing notes not needed for a specific piece, thereby reducing visual clutter and potential for error.
