Born Petrus Thomas Ratajczyk in Brooklyn, New York, Peter Steele was a towering figure in the heavy metal world, best known as the frontman, bassist, and principal songwriter for Type O Negative. Before achieving international fame, Steele cut his teeth in the Brooklyn underground with the heavy metal band Fallout and the abrasive crossover-thrash group Carnivore. With Type O Negative, he pioneered a signature blend of doom metal, gothic rock, and industrial textures, characterized by his profound bass-baritone vocals and dark, satirical lyricism. The 1993 release of 'Bloody Kisses' propelled him into the mainstream, earning the band the first Gold and Platinum certifications for Roadrunner Records. Beyond his imposing stage presence, Steele was a meticulous producer and composer who balanced morose atmosphere with melodic sensibilities. His reliance on the Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal and his custom-modified Fernandes Tremor and B.C. Rich Warlock basses allowed him to craft a gritty, overdriven low-end that remains a cornerstone of the gothic metal sound.
